Robert P. Neal, President and Treasurer
Mr. Neal is a former Assistant to the Director, Office of Administration for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. He served as a member of the Lake County Board and the Lake County Forest Preserve District board from 1982 to 1998. In 1961 he founded Able Electronics Inc., which grew to be the third-largest electronic service firm in Illinois. He served ten years as a director of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. Lieutenant Commander Neal retired from the United States Naval Reserves in 1999 after serving for twenty-six years.
Randall Whitmore, Vice President
Randy is a former Lake County Illinois Board Member from District 2 and a Lake County business owner. He joined the board in 2003 and resides in Wadsworth, Illinois with his wife Andrea.
James Hayner, Secretary
Jim recently retired after over twenty years as Village Administrator of Gurnee, Illinois. He spent a total of thirty-five years working for the village. Jim was instrumental in the construction of Gurnee Mills mall and the Tri State Parkway as well as other numerous economic developments. Jim lives in Gurnee, Illinois with his wife.
Steve has been a general partner at Lake County Grading Company for over ten years. He is an avid hunter and environmental enthusiast. He resides in Harvard, Illinois with his wife Jeri and three children.
Dick has had a life long association with the waterways in and around Chicago. He is a retired Executive Director of the Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District where he worked for forty-eight years. He enjoys biking along the waterways, Lake Michigan, and his hometown of Evanston where he lives with his wife Marsha Richman.
Kirk is a graduate of Montana State University and an alumnus of the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University where he obtained a Master’s in Real Estate and Finance. He is a partner with the real estate development, leasing, and management company Hamilton Partners Incorporated. He lives in Barrington, Illinois with his wife and three children.
Joe was appointed to WRI's Executive Board in 2012. Joe is a civil engineer and resides in Wadsworth, Illinois.
Donald L. Hey PhD, Executive Director
Dr. Hey is the Executive Director and co-founder of Wetland's Research Incorporated and The Wetlands Initiative. His research focuses on the restoration of river and wetland systems and the development of low-cost management programs for sustaining natural aquatic ecosystems. Dr. Hey has served on numerous committees and editorial boards, including the Integrated Nitrogen Committee of the Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Assessment Plan; Technical Proposal Evaluation Committee, Everglades National Park, National Park Service; International Joint Commission, Levels Reference Study; National Research Council, Committee on Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems; Illinois Department of Conservation, Wetland Advisory Council; Ecological Engineering and Restoration Ecology. He is co-author of A Case for Wetland Restoration (John Wiley & Sons, 1999.) Dr. Hey is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Resources Association, the Society of Sigma Xi, Lambda Alpha International, and the Society of Wetland Scientists.
Timothy R. Lanum, Director of Communications and Development
Tim is a communications and finance professional with over twenty years of experience of helping organizations succeed. Tim has reported, written, and produced news for various radio and television stations in the Midwest, including NBC in Chicago. He spent seven years as creative content producer with BG&F Media Group in Chicago where he developed video features, news releases, and additional communication projects for corporations, public television stations, colleges, distance learning venues, and small businesses. Tim served on the Executive Board of Directors of Wetlands Research Inc. since 2004, when he worked as Midwest Territory Manager for a subsidy of Toll Brothers Incorporated, a national home builder. Tim has a BA from Columbia College and resides in Lake County, Illinois with his wife Myra and daughters Jacquelyne and Victoria.
Jerry Curran, Site Manager
Jerry has been with Wetlands Research Inc. since 1998. He is a designated erosion control inspector and has certifications in wetland delineation and herbicide application. Jerry manages the restoration staff and oversees native plant and seed installation, as well as herbicide application to non-native and invasive plant species. He plans and organizes the greenhouse propagation of native plants, conducts prescribed burs as needed, and leads educational tours. Jerry is an avid hunter, angler, and environmental enthusiast. He lives in Trevor, Wisconsin with his wife Nicole and children Will and Grace.
